Do you think grades are necessary? Rene Descartes, William Shakespeare, Galileo, and Plato were never given grades? What are your thoughts on the positive and negatives of grades in all grades, but our focus is here is us up to age seven.
I go back and forth on this. I was just thinking the other day about how I always got Fs (for fair, not failing) on penmanship in elementary school. One time I got a P (poor) and one time I got a G (good). I have gone through life thinking that I have horrible handwriting. You know what? It's fine! Also, they don't teach penmanship anymore, so who cares!
But then! There are things you can grade somewhat objectively. In some cases, there are right answers, to, say, a math quiz. Nowadays, though, if you don't show your work in the way they want, it doesn't matter if you got the right answer or not. So it's actually not objective.
